Recycled pallet wood may contain a chemical treatment, so before using it to grow herbs, make sure it’s the right grade. Manufacturers treat pallet boards to avoid invasive species, either through heat treatment or fumigation. Heat treated pallets bear the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) logo along with an “HT”. Fumigated pallet wood has an “MB” which stands for methyl bromide, the chemical used in fumigation.
