Also known as Treasure Flowers for their jewel-bright blooms, Gazania are fantastic for adding color to patios and sunny borders. They are grown as either annuals or as spreading, evergreen perennials. The daisy-like flowers love sunshine and close when they can’t get enough of it. The blooms come in shades of pink, red, rose, bronze, gold, and orange and are set off by the cool green foliage.

Native to South Africa, Gazania love a hot, sunny spot in the garden. Soil should be moderately fertile and well-drained. Gazanias do well in coastal and gravel gardens and are suitable for containers and hanging baskets.
Annual Gazanaias can be sown from seed in late winter/early spring. Sow in pots or trays with seed compost. They will benefit from warmth to germinate, so place them either in a heated greenhouse or in a clear plastic bag on a warm windowsill. When your Gazania seedlings are large enough, transplant them into pots and harden them outside on warmer days before planting them out after the last frost.
Care
Uproot gazania regularly to ensure profuse flowering, and although gazania do well in hot, dry conditions, consider watering them if dry spells are prolonged. Feed container-grown gazania with a high-potassium fertilizer every two weeks. Pot grown Gazania can be overwintered indoors.
